I was on the chat and Madz came in and couldn't play DoD, here is the transcript. <Maxwell5123> anyone else here agree that Matthew Steele the maker of the music fer DoD is a bloody genius? <scola> Pretty much everyone agrees. <Madz> Hey there, uuuh, I'm having a problem with dungeons of dredmore, more specifically with a file called 'release_the_hounds32.png' I've searched forums about it and checked the cache but wasn't able to fix it, anyone here ever had something like that? <scola> The music is brilliant. He used some nifty software to make it sound like classic old school game tunes. And the tunes themseles are great. <Maxwell5123> my 3 cats are all sleeping on their sides exposing their bellies <Madz> And some of them are p. cool, others are alright in my book, what scola said, they have 'gamey' sounds. <Maxwell5123> its taking so much self displine not to pet the, <Maxwell5123> them* <scola> Madz, it sounds like some file in the game got corrupted. <scola> Can re-install the game? <scola> Can you...? <Maxwell5123> 4 fav songs <Maxwell5123> intro, brawl, pits, dervish <Madz> Sure, I'll try deleting and redownloading it, guess checking the game cache wasn't enough <Maxwell5123> s*** make that 5 <LionsDen> Do you have the RotDGs Madz? <Maxwell5123> wait 6 <Maxwell5123> F*** IT ALL OF THEM ARE MY FAVS <scola> Yeah, I'd try that first. <LionsDen> Wait Madz. <LionsDen> Do you have RotDGs? <Madz> Nope. <LionsDen> That's your problem there. <LionsDen> Are you running the RC? <Madz> ...what is that? <LionsDen> The beta test for the new expansion. <Madz> Noooope. <Maxwell5123> time fer some DoD <Madz> That's what I need? :v <LionsDen> No. <Madz> Oh. <LionsDen> That file is from the RotDGs expansion. <scola> hold on, Lions, are you talking about a beta thing? <LionsDen> Yeah, the new DLC beta. Look at the topic. <scola> ok, Madz isn't running the beta. <scola> He's just running plain ol' Dredmor. <LionsDen> Yeah, but the file he mentioned is part of the RotDGs expansion. <Madz> Yup, and as I launch the game it say 'hey there buddy you don't have this file, we're going to crash now' * Maxwell5123 has quit (Quit: Page closed) <scola> uh.... hmm. <Madz> says* <LionsDen> The beta if he was running it could have some of these problems. <scola> Well, again, just try reinstalling the game first <Madz> Download is around 25% we shall see soon. <scola> That's as good a first troubleshooting step as any. <LionsDen> That would be my first guess as well. Try reinstalling. <scola> If that doesn't work... uh. Turn it off then turn it back on. <Madz> Ahahaha <LionsDen> Yes, but if he was playing the beta, way easier to fix then. <scola> Or remove Dredmor from your computer and blow on it a few times. <Madz> Get a knife and modify your Dredmor to work on american computers. <scola> Maybe swab it with a q-tip dipped in mineral spirits. <onyhow> hey <LionsDen> Hello <onyhow> did rc 5 require any installation of prior rc? <LionsDen> Nope <LionsDen> Diggles drop LOTS of native gold. <onyhow> oh good <LionsDen> Bolt vending is supposed to be fixed. <onyhow> rc4 need 3... <onyhow> fixed how? <onyhow> also what's good native gold do? <Daynab> Madz, do you have RotDG? <LionsDen> Before, only 3 bolts showed up. Now should be back to normal. <Madz> Nope <Daynab> delete the expansion (not expansion2) folder, that should fix it <LionsDen> He doesn't have the beta. <LionsDen> Native gold becomes gold through crafting plus may be alchemy recipes. <onyhow> ah <onyhow> sucks for drinking huh? <scola> Not recommended. <Madz> Well, it's still downloading but it does have an 'expansion' folder in it. <LionsDen> Gold ingots cost a bit when you sell them. Free money. <scola> hold on Madz <scola> Daynab's suggestion may have been him assuming that you were trying to run the Beta. <Madz> Oh. <LionsDen> That's funny Madz, you should only have that folder if you own RotDGs or are trying the beta. <scola> First, try just running it after the reinstall. <scola> hrm... <LionsDen> If it still crashes, try renaming the expansion folder and try running again. <Madz> No idea either, I don't touch the steam folders at all soooo yeah. <Madz> Alright <Madz> 65% <LionsDen> If game works fine after that, you can delete the renamed folder. <LionsDen> Are you on a mac or linux Madz? <Madz> Nope, Windows 7 64 bit <LionsDen> I have windows XP with steam DoD and I didn't have RotDGs until recently. Never had that folder show up in my DoD directory. So that is strange. <Madz> This is the first time I've tried to play in some time <Madz> So, no idea when this could've started <LionsDen> Well, you will like v1.0.10 then. <LionsDen> And you'll love the new free DLC when it comes out. <Madz> I hope so The part that most interests me on Dredmor is the skill trees <Madz> are* <LionsDen> The new DLC will add a few new skills and other things. <Daynab> Madz: I believe the trick works for 1.0.10 too though no idea why you have the problem <Daynab> let us know <Madz> Sure will <Madz> Download done <LionsDen> I'm playing the new test beta now and even with the bugs it's still good. <Madz> Same problem, renaming the folder. <Madz> And it works! <LionsDen> Great. <Madz> That was...puzzling. <LionsDen> Now we just need to let them know steam is messing up the downloads. <scola> yeah. <LionsDen> Going to post it now. So steam seems to be adding the expansion folder but is missing files to Madz system.
If he has neither RotDG nor any one of the 2nd expansion's RCs, then he just has basic DoD 1.0.10, and that version definitely doesn't need this icon to work. But then again, considering what the hell has happened with Steam achievements (on their sided) a few days ago, I say it is possible that something went to hell on their side.
Yeah, he didn't have RotDGs and he wasn't playing with the RC. In fact he hadn't been playing for quite a while. Steam just decided to give him the expansion directory at the least. Most likely it also gave him only some of the expansion files and that was causing his problem. Once he renamed the expansion folder, he had no problems. At least he said it was running and I never heard anything else from him.
Well, the way DoD is made, renaming the expansion folder should make the game forget about it being there, so that is a solution.
Yes, but will he be the only person impacted by this. I doubt it. That's why I wrote up the issue and made this thread.
