Let me start by saying that I love the map icons in 1.0.9 rev B. They look great, and are easy to tell apart regardless of map size. However, there's still several items I find myself hunting for all over the map in game after game. Things that would be wonderfully useful if added to the minimap: * Vending Machines (Preferably with different icons for each type) * BBQ Grills (sometimes its worth going back to grill some more steaks) * Mysterious Portals (because you may want to play a few more floors before going through them) * possibly levers you haven't pulled yet (Though that may get cluttered in practice, so I could live with or without this. The three bullets above this are much higher priority. Note that if implemented, it would need to be that single-use levers leave the map once pulled, or else they'd quickly get obnoxious) It also wouldn't hurt if doors stood out a little more, so you could tell where the division between rooms is, and thus more readily mentally process the map. Doors/room borders are currently a black dot on a dark grey background, and it's really hard to notice on some monitors. The same goes for water/lava/goo. On my current monitor, I can only see water on the minimap if I change the brightness and contrast settings to levels that are obnoxious. Things currently on the minimap that'd I'd prefer to see go away: * Bookshelves. (If you're a crafting character, you always want to click on them as soon as you find them. Once you've done so, they're no longer important. All other characters can ignore them. I'd be okay with unread shelves staying on the map, but used ones especially block the view of more important stuff for no good reason.)
I agree almost completely with the first post. Specifically, my opinion, is as follows (from most to least important): 1: Vending Machines -- How often on early levels do you not have enough for everything you want out of that crafting/bolt machine? My guess is "very often". 2: Mysterious Portal -- This is something you'll likely leave and come back to, especially in early levels. Having to remember where the hell it was sucks. 3: Grills -- Because eating raw meat is hazardous to your health! 4: Bookshelves -- Removing empty shelves would be an awesome thing to do, unless someday a skill is planned to "refill" a bookshelf (similar to the last archaeology skill does to anvils). 5: Doors -- I don't really think doors are necessary on the minimap, but thinning the wall lines would be great and make room shape/entrances much clearer.
What would be great is that user can enable/disable certain types of/all icons appearing on the minimap to reduce clutter if they don't like all the icons.
