So when I play Dredmor, even if I don't have an crafting at all, I feel REALLY compelled to completely clear everything, collect all the items, try to break all the walls, kill all the stragglers, etc. I am more than willing to make several trips every time I move to the next floor so that I can cart giant piles of stuff with me everywhere I go (this is especially true when I AM playing with crafting skills...EVERYTHING gets kept...LOL). I am also constantly going back up floors to finish off a lutefisk shrine or re-check the shops/vending machines I've passed to make sure I don't need something from them. Yeah, I got the OCD bug bad...BUT I LOVE IT! So I was wondering what other people who might be "slightly" OCD about playing Dredmor do to help themselves save time? I generally leave "stashes" of goodies around the floor I am on so as to not have to make 20 trips per floor back to my main stash, and then gather it all up once the floor is cleared. I only leave these secondary stashes in perfectly square rooms, so that I can just check my minimap and know where I stashed stuff without having to comb the whole dungeon floor again. I also do all my crafting once per floor, when I am done, so that I don't have to keep running back every time I find a new piece of steel (even though I REALLY want to). If any of you have other time saving tips for me (and others like me) please share. And if there are any good time-saving or OCD friendly mods that aren't on the Workshop (I am only using Workshop mods ATM, but am not opposed to non-workshop mods, and have used them before in the past), please let me know!
I finally forced myself to stop picking up certain things (crafting powders, unrefined ores, any "crude" weapon, 0-3 star items that aren't immediately equippable) because I was so sick of making 7 trips back to the shop each floor, only to get 130 Zorkmids per trip. I eventually realized that I was spending an extra 15 minutes on each floor playing Inventory Tetris and making about 3 Zorkmids/minute profit. This triggered an anger reflex that was finally able to overcome my "pick up ALL the things!" habits. Also, I simply don't have time for my already 12-hour run to stretch into a 20-hour run, which is what happens if you don't draw a "this is useless; just pretend it's not there" line in the sand somewhere. Besides, it's not like hoarding stuff in this game helps you much - if you don't craft it into something at some point, if you don't actually equip that thing with the side-grade stats.... it's all wasted. You can't take it with you. That character gets a little "Vanquished Lord Dredmor!" tag and everything in their inventory, on their person, stuff they left laying about - it's all gone for good once (if) Dredmor puffs into ash. That said, it took me a long, long, long, long time to train myself to ignore certain things that I know are useless to my current build and sell for less than 100 Zorkmids each.
I actually really enjoy the "inventory Tetris" as you very perfectly put it. I make super organized piles and cart them individually between floors and what not. It's always exciting when I find a teleporter pad that provides a shortcut from my stash to my preferred stairs down. And I generally make 2 trips to the shop per floor (unless I just stumble into one while I am exploring), once when I start a floor and once after the monster zoo. Until then I just set up an extra little pile of "stuff to sell."
