Unable to save, game locks up completely

    Hi,
I'm using Windows XP, service pack 3 and my computer is on my company's domain. Dungeons of Dredmor tries to save to the My Documents folder, which is on that domain. Whenever I try saving, the game locks up completely, and even after an hour still hasn't been able to save.

Please help! Is there a way to change how save works, so that I can pick the directory, or save it to a folder like c:\savedgames or just somewhere other than the My Documents folder. I can't play with saves, and I'm really not good at this game, so I need save games! It works great other than that, but being a single dad, I can't spend hours playing straight, and need to be able to save and turn it off sometimes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Dave

Sounds like its trying to save the file on the shared drive like you said, and it might be write protected so it cant make a new folder or the save file. As for changing the save path I checked a few forums and google'd for awhile and couldn't find anything other then changing registries or something like that. Best bet is to wait for an admin to answer. Or you could not play games while at work or on a company computer?

The company I work for gave me a laptop, which I have with me at home at night. I've been using it for a couple of years now, and never play games at work. The reviews for this game were so great though, and I saw so many playthroughs on youtube, that for the first time in years I purchased and I'm playing a game.

Yes, I could have a different computer, but why waste the money if they give me one?
The only issue I have with it at all is this domain issue. Other than that, the game works very well.

    This sounds very frustrating.

I've never seen an option to change the save folder, in all honesty... some games do that, rather annoyingly. Force you to save to very specific (and often very strange and buried) locations.

I'm sure there's probably SOME way to make it happen... but not sure what. Perhaps looking through the game folder (wherever that is) for some sort of config file might help? Not sure. Wish I had better advice, cause I know how bloody frustrating this particular sort of thing can be.

Could you make a symlink in the current save folder pointing to a different location where the saving would occur?

I was playing again last night, and also found I can't use stairs, because it tries to auto-save when you take the stairs. Two hours later, even with the network drive connected, it stayed locked up until I finally killed it. I can try out characters on the first level, but that's all I can do. :(

I like your idea, mrioes, but they've got that locked down so I can't change the location of My Documents.

@GeneralSalad, a symlink would be nice, but if it was in that location I'd just run into the same problem. It wouldn't be able to access the folder to get to the symlink, and it just seems to be having a lot of issues with that drive.

I know there is a way to specify startup properties, so maybe the developers could give an override there. Like, -savefolder=...
That would be a huge improvement, and I wouldn't think it would need to change in very many places to use that startup option if it was there. Please consider this, developers. I love this game and just want to play it!

@Misery, I did dig through and actually used textpad to do a file search through every file in the entire Steam folder, hoping somewhere that would be hard-coded where I could change it. I also searched the registry, but no luck there either. If there was any config file or any way to change it, I would really, really like to know how.

    Thanks for everyone's help!

You could set it up in a VM. IIRC graphics cards are already supported by VMware.

I'll give that a try tonight, that's a good idea.

    Thanks!

I found if I restarted the computer while not attached to the network, I could use my local My Documents successfully, and the saves work. I also installed it on my old computer that I built about six or seven years ago, and it works great there as well. I still wish there was a way to specify where to save, or at least pick an alternate location.
