What makes my character heal and kill so well?

Discussion in 'Dungeons of Dredmor General' started by Victor Gijsbers, Feb 16, 2013.

  1. I'm playing my first game of DoD, on the middle difficulty with permadeath. I've cleared most of the first level, and this is going well. Very well. My character basically never gets hurt: even when damage is dealt to her, her health remains almost full and generally recharges to full by the next turn (I've never even been tempted to eat food); and enemies who hit her seem to immediately lose most of their health when they do so. Which is fine, of course, except that I don't understand which of my skills or items is/are having these effects? I'll give you my skills and items, and hopefully you can help me figure it out!

    Skills:
    - Staff fighting 1 (trainee stick wrangler)
    - Artful Dodging 2 (fidgety fellow, aikido)
    - Mathemagic 3 (jump, diminuating, golden ratio)
    - Astrology 1 (radiant aura)
    - Magic Training 1 (certified mage)
    - Archaeology 1 (rogue archaeologist)
    - Magical Law 1 (confiscate evidence)
Of these powers, I usually have Radiant Aura active.

    Worn items:
    - Poshro, the knives of gemstones (head armour: 2 piercing, 2 critical chance, 3 counter chance, 4 dodge chance)
    - Robe of the beige warlock (body armour: +1 righteous/putrefying/transmutative/existential resistance, +1 block, + armour absorption)
    - Cracked orb (shield: -1 nimblebess, +4 mana, +1 magic power)
    - Leather belt (+ 1 block chance)
    - Hefty stick (staff: 2 crushing)
    - Adventuring gloves (+1 block chance)
    - Adventuring pants (+1 dodge chance)
    - Cyruumuum, the calming poison (footwear: +1 conflagratory damage, +1 dodge chance)
    - Sapphire Ring of the Deepest Sky (+5 life, +5 mana, +2 health regeneration, +2 mana regeneration; I have the idea that is also causes rain??)

    Thanks for any information!

it's that Sapphire Ring. It's a deep-dungeon item; I imagine you must have gotten it out of a very lucky Fountain drink. It procs a rain spell (I think whenever you get hit?) that heals you for, what would be on DL1, an absurd number of HP. When you're supposed to get it (DL 8 or 9, I think), it's still quite nice, but not quite as gamebreaking.

The auto-counterattack is probably from Poshro, the Knives of Gemstones -- that sounds like, though with the artifact name this is just a guess, a Crown of Thorns -- another middling-to-deep dungeon level item that offers a decent auto-counterattack on hit.

Realistically, I'd count this as a very, very lucky run and just roll with it. ;D

  3. Thanks, very useful! Given that it's my first game, I'll probably still get killed very soon. ;)

(The Poshro is actually the archaeologist's hat that I enchanted on some altar.)

Even on Going Rogue, Radiant Aura is a powerful spell on floor 1. When/if it procs it tends to blow up everything around you and leave it stunned if not kill it. Between that and Aikido you should be laying waste to all of those low level monsters.

I wasn't aware of how powerful that ring was, though. I tend to get it on the lower floors so it never seemed OP.

  5. Maybe I can add a completely different question: given that I have no crafting skills, should I pick up reagents and ingots and stuff like that at all, or can I just leave them be?

If you care about the money you get from them, then take them..

Ingots and a Tinkering kit can get you a few dozen low-level bolts for when you need to plink something.

There's a few other level-zero recipes (and there are some items you can find that increase crafting skill while equipped), but I can't find the list atm.

  8. Okay, right, but I should just sell them then? I.e., you don't get to do interesting things with reagents at some point in the game if you don't have crafting skills?

    (Crossposted with Turbo164.)

Right, I'll check out the level 0 recipes. (That's the stuff you see in the crafting menu when you press the "have skill" button, I assume?)

Search for the phrase "tactics everyone can use" in the General forum. There's a thread for it. :)
