I was on level 9 (latest patch w/Conquest of Wizardlands) and a diggle geologist petrified itself. I went over and killed it, but after killing it I stepped on the corpse and immediately lost ~60 health and died. What the heck happened?
Ruigi, did you not actually know how it happened? Does anybody have an idea? I spent a fair bit of time getting that character to that point, and now I have two other characters on level 8 and I'm not going to send either of them down to level 9 until I have some idea what was up with the buggy-seeming instadeath and how it's to be avoided.
Had another couple of strange encounters with Diggle Geologists. (One of those times, rather than leaving an instadeath-causing corpse, the self-petrifying Diggle Geologist simply disappeared.) I think this monster is seriously bugged.
Perharps the diggle triggered a very hot fiery surprise trap and set a rune on the floor. How about the fire resistence of your fallen hero? These evil traps are a reason for choosing alchemy for fire resistence encrusts (GRPD). You can easily achieve +30 fire resistence and ignore fire damage. I had a high fire resistence character with firedamage instabilities. This character exploded with nearly every hit and didn't take any fire damage. Really awesome seeing hords of monsters comitting suicide. Another possibility is a toxic/necromantic corpse explosion with instant death before the animation appears (caused by a mummy-type).
