This is very easy to do. I don't see the point in making it self destruct since it can't leave the floor it was built on.

Another thing you can do is pick a teleport skill like knightly leap. this will help you retreat to a position where you can hold them off.
My Clockwork Knights Mods and Tactics mod both have modified teleport spells. You are free to check them out if you are looking to see how they work.
