He really isn't THAT terribly hard, but he can be nearly impossible if you aren't geared correctly and don't have some sort of anti-Dredmor abilities.

For a caster with a silence (Wandcrafting via Sonic Wands, or Magic Training, or Magical Law) and Astrology (Solar Inscriptions) and a teleport (Mathemagics), this fight is amazingly easy. Zero risk.

For a melee class, a silence is helpful (Battle Geology prob the most popular choice for warrior types) but you need to be able to handle his melee. Lots of armor/resists, and being either block capped or high avoidance (it's even possible to hit 100% counter rate) helps huge.

In addition, for melee classes, having a way to negate his huge block/counter/dodge rates is very helpful. Battle Geology shines here. Piracy (Black Spot) also helps. Diggle god of digging helps too (Fleshbore debuff).

If you need specific advice build tweaking, just post here and somebody will certainly advise you. I've killed D on Going Rogue with pretty much every type of character other than non-caster ranged (warrior melee, rogue melee, caster).

I've never faced Dredmor without beating him (GRPD). If I die always die to some lolz'y situation that I got myself into beforehand (Eye of Ra pushes everything around you on hit? Too bad you pushed an altar in the doorway and don't have a teleport!, ect).

Just takes some very careful game play.

Ah yes, I remember the irony of killing Dredmor in two turns with a steam charge + a melee attack which proc'ed about 10 extra attacks via Clockwork Knight and double Ravager passives. Of course it worked only because I was properly specced in counter & crits, otherwise it could've been a disaster.

Yeah. Those are ready for a mild nerf like Rings of Extra Attacks in Chengband. But try that against Vlad Diggula. That may work. But I rather doubt it. I think that unholy thing is several times as tough as Dredmor.

I killed him last night with a caster, using nothing but the Astrology capstone, Stars Aligned. With no risk at all. He never got a single move against me.

I opened a door and saw him in a small crafting room with a few other monsters, I slammed the door, stayed next to it, and began chain-casting Stars Aligned, and mass-consuming all of the mana recovery skills and items I had. It took only around 600-700 mana, and the hard part was just being patient that I was actually doing decent damage despite the pathetic little *plunk* sound each cast made.

I've never even made it to him with a melee character, so I can't help with the OP's troubles.

You can always wear two off those Mirror Darkly shields and reflect 100% of his missile spells back at him. Then he'll just kill himself. ;)

And then he does a Fulminaric Bolt...
