I think it could work if you did asynchronous PvE. That is, you make the floors something like three to four orders of magnitude bigger (freaking immense), and then you give each person action points. Moving or doing anything (casting, eating, drinking) other than rearranging your inventory, skill tabs, or anything that doesn't actually advance the turn counter decrements your actions by 1 point. Every player regenerates their AP at a rate of, say, 1:5min, and you have a cap of, say, 500 AP. (All just eyeballing, so bear with me).

"But what happens when I run out of AP and my compatriots keep taking their turns?" Well, you'll need to spend your last couple AP to get to a safe location, that's what. You'd need to either designate certain rooms as 'safe rooms' where monsters never spawn or alter how the monster spawn mechanics are done (maybe they spawn on the hour and move when not in sight of an active player every 5 min?). And if you get caught outside, well...you may just get eaten by a grue.

This also lets you make things more difficult: since you have a party, you can have focused characters. One guy is a tank, another a trapsmith/crafter, a third a blaster caster, and a fourth a healer/secondary melee. Sure, because of how skill selection is done in DoD, you may get some deviations from this, but because of the potential for specialization, that means that more difficult traps (for instance) can be found on earlier floors, since the potential of having a pure rogue in the party is higher. Monsters can have more HP due to the vastly increased damage output of the party as a whole, and can deal more damage due to the viability of a character that does nothing but healing and support.

At this point, though, it's almost not the same game anymore.

Multiplayer DoD will never happen. A multiplayer game in the style of DoD is more probably by the day. Fax has some good points. (I wonder if the God on his head gave him the ideas?)

Anyone who has played a multiplayer RPG knows most of what must happen to the interface for this sort of thing to happen. A DoD MMORPG would be even more Roguelike than current DoD. It would have no choice but to be.

Unique monsters would wipe out entire parties of characters with glee and keep going. They have to be tough to compete against a collaboration of multiple players. There would need to be additional support skills and curses would have to be neatralizable in one or more ways. And there would have to be vicious party wiping kittens on every floor.

It could easily enough still be turn based, as it is currently (from what I can tell) is player action, monster action (resolved so fast it seems similtaneous), player action and so on.
So it could be player 1, player 2, player 3, player 4, monster action, player 1, and so on.
Though you could also have player turn order jumbled by agility.

Sure it means waiting for others to take their turn, but given you get single actions it shouldnt take that long and you are meant to be working togeather, so taking forever on a turn will just get the rest of your team likely abandoning you to the monster zoo.

Personaly DoD is good as it is though as seperate game I'd be interested enough to check it out :)
