I liked dungeon defenders well enough, right up until I hit the level cap. A friend of mine had an apprentice, so I started leveling a huntress. Spent a week or two getting gear upgrades and everything, then when I hit level cap and tried Insanity difficulty I found out that all player damage was nerfed by 90% in that mode and my character was immediately garbage, along with anything else that isn't an apprentice. Quit the next day, never looked back.

That was some time ago, though.

To be fair, if you get a good high-level weapon and optimize it for damage, it's possible to down multiple basic enemies (by "basic enemies" I also mean orcs and similar stuff, and not only kobolds) with one charged shot, and possible to fire two charged shots per second, and that is on insane difficulty. Sure, not something to do with a tower builder since doing that means losing a few hundred points (or more) of bonuses to tower damage or something of this sort, but if you are playing with a team and can dedicate yourself to making a combat character (as opposed to a tower building one) it is still possible to be effective then.

Of course, fully upgrading such a weapon is an exercise in insanity, seeing as you want something with as many upgrade levels as possible, and thus a few hundred of upgrade levels, and it costs a lot of gold to get that done. Which is why, once again, you want friends - with them grinding gold for that isn't that monotonous.

Yeah, I think that was the problem. I had started an apprentice, then my friend ground for a load of good gear for about a week while I was away, so I wanted to catch up with the huntress. When we hit insanity, I really couldn't contribute, he didn't have much free time to play, I didn't have a good insanity-grade waepon to upgrade or another tower-builder to fall back on. I felt like I hit a brick wall with the character I had been working on and didn't really want to go back to another.

Apprentice is the odd way they do a type of easy mode for DD. I played it a bit, but I too felt it was far too hard with most builds and far too easy as an Apprentice.

I find the Squire/Knight to be the easiest. Barriers that damage the attackers is great.

    Unfun things about DD:

*Inventory management. Set bonuses meant you kinda wanted at least 8 categories of gear (dps leather, tower leather, dps plate, tower plate, etc), with more or less copies depending on what your characters were already wearing. Trying to organize all of this in a list format (rather than visual don't-have-to-be-full-pages) while picking up 60 new pieces in one map, was a bit of a chore. Oh and there's weapons and pets for more categories.

*Shared build limit meant you usually had exactly one App/Squire building towers, maybe 1 monk building auras. Anyone of that same class (or any Huntress usually; Traps were useful but usually considered sub-optimal) who had 3 less points of Tower Damage was delegated to running around picking up mana to drop. Tryhards who memorized "ideal" setups would immediately notice if someone other than them built something. "WTF I CAN'T FIT THE 2ND HARPOON TOWER IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER, WHICHEVER OF YOU F***ING NOOBS BUILT ONE OF YOUR NON-PERFECT TOWERS SOMEWHERE NEEDS TO DELETE IT RIGHT THE F*** NOW!!!11" When you're running around on easy with 3 level 12 friends, sure it's fun; but once you reach the endgame treadmill, it's srz bzns. It was kinda nice that this setup meant one max-level guy could powerlevel 3 noobs who got free xp and loot; if each player had their own build limit, it's possible that the ragers would switch to saying "YOU CANT JOIN MY MAP UNLESS YOU HAVE 1700+ TOWER DAMAGE!".

    *Maps that take 6+ hours.

    Fun things:

*Playing with a full group of non max level friends on non max difficulty. "Guys check out my new Bowling Ball tower!" "Sweet, this bow does like 73 damage!"

*New pets! (assuming they're new-new and not "same as old but max level is a bit higher so you get to spend 20 hours worth of grinding to re-level it).

I know that grinding is part of the game and I play/have played D1, D2, D3, PoE, Torchlight, T2, WoW, CoH, GW, etc; but DD had a few "unique" features that made the grind more painful than others. The early/midgame was fun though.

Been playing a lot of Prime World: Defenders: http://store.steampowered.com/app/235360/
It's a card collection-based tower defense. If you like collecty things and alternating between hard plot missions and cash/exp-building randomly generated missions, you will probably like this game. I wish it had more maps, though (there aren't that many.)

This is what I could describe as "An unusual way to die in a Roguelike": [IMG]

Waz is constantly adding stuff to Wazhack. I never saw one either, but I never tried that branch anyway. I may have to try again.

I have been playing UnEpic for the past 2 days and so far it's not bad. I have noticed one problem with the 1-41-xyz build on the game in that spears seem to ALWAYS sell for 1 coin no matter how good they are. If you like Wazhack, you might like this game. You can download the game directly from them and play it with a few missing features if you haven't purchased it. You can find it at www.unepicgame.com and just navigate to the downloads. As far as a tip for the game goes, swing your weapons at the walls as some are fake and will open up hidden areas. I didn't know this until a certain quest had me scratching my head and I had to resort to a Youtube video and it showed the character attacking the walls.

UnEpic is definitely a good game. IIRC Someone from here made the English translation (the dev is Spanish)... but I cannot remember who.

Also it has the most unintentionally hilarious thinking out of the box moment in any game I know.

At some point in the game, you have to go into some kind of water, or slime, I don't exactly remember. Anyways when you come out of it you will die from damage over time. Unless you remove the items it created from your inventory.

Because I was an early purchaser of Elemental, I received a free copy of "Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes". Even though I've been disappointed in the series, I've decided to give the new game a try. I'm not 100% sure of everything that has changed from the previous game, but after a very brief time with the game, it looks pretty much the same. The mechanics for getting heroes is different, and I saw a quest that I'd not seen before (involving a riddle). The game was never 'horrible', just not what I was hoping it would be, which was a decent replacement for Master of Magic. I probably won't be playing it a lot, just enough to see what it's like and what exactly is different about it.

I was going to get Fallen Enchantress... but then they announced Legendary Heroes. So I waited for that. But I haven't bought it, 'cos I want to hear if it's still broken and/or if Stardock are going to stop dicking about.

Meh. Fallen Enchantress had the better box art.

The comments that I've seen talk about how buggy it is, and how unstable it is. I haven't gotten far enough into the game to see any specific problems though.

The game is kinda closer to Civilization than Master of Magic, in that there's lots of technologies to research before you can use certain weaponry, build certain improvements, and so on. What bothers me about that is that that kind of stuff makes sense in a game that spans thousands of years, but not so much sense in a game of the smaller scale that the Elemental universe does. MoM had it about right, where you needed to build infrastructure, to build better improvements, rather than research infrastructure to do the same. In that regards, gameplay in MoM was a whole lot smoother. It kept you focused on the magic and building up your economy to the point that you can support your troops.

It's better for a game to do one thing well, and focus on that, than to do lots of things, none of them well. That's why I believe we remember those early games, why they still are fun to play -- they had a great deal of focus on one or two things, and didn't lay down impediments between you and that which the game focused on. You want warriors, you built barracks. You want cavalry, you built stables, you want priests, you built temples. Then you built banks and marketplaces and merchants guilds to make money, and you built granaries and farmers markets and foresters guilds to feed your troops. All that other crap that the elemental game adds in are totally unnecessary, and is simply there to slow the game down.

/Edit In other words, I'm still playing Master of Magic now and again.

Actually, from what I know it stops at 1 HP. It's just that with that much health anything can kill you in 1 hit, including the tentacles which there are a lot of in the sewer.

I really need to finish that. Bought it direct way back in the day - so good.

Re: Elemental; yeah, I got a free copy too, as a prepurchaser. I hope it doesn't suck.

Got my free copy too, really appreciate it, I think it's an awesome thing to do. But yeah, I agree with Haldurson about the Elemental games. The previous ones were kinda 'meh'. We'll see about this one.
